Are you all actually serious here? This isn’t the first time I’ve seen someone say something like this, it certainly won’t be the last and I’m sure this is a pervasive attitude amongst a certain contingent of the fandom, but I just need to ask—how completely delusional do you have to be to ignore everything that happened in this storyline? Do you understand how dangerous this sort of attitude is in real life? That it’s the same attitude that comes from people who excuse perpetrators of abuse? That it’s the same attitude that comes from people who victim-blame?

I have to wonder if we’re reading the same books because there seems to be something that I’m missing. I could have sworn that Viserys was the one who sold his sister like a slave. I could have sworn that he was the one who beat Dany whenever she defied him. I could have sworn that he was the one who used sexual violence against her as punishment (i.e. having her strip for him, twisting her nipples as he threatened her). I could have sworn that he was the one who told her that he would let all 40,000 Dothraki men rape her if that’s what it took to get him his army. !ADWD SPOILER! I could have sworn that he attempted to sneak into her room and rape her the night before her wedding. !ADWD SPOILER!

This was a man who raised Daenerys and told her stories once upon a time in her life, yes, but that didn’t make him a good man. He was nice to her when he saw fit. He protected her because she was one of the only things of worth that he had left—I  use the word “thing” because that’s evidently how he saw Dany in the end. He was taught from a young age that she belonged to him and so he saw her as a bargaining chip. He must have cared for her in some capacity at some point in his life, sure, but his desperation made him cruel and he still treated her as though he owned her. Despite Viserys’ harsh life, he was still an abuser and he was still vile. He thought his sister weaker than him and instead of protecting her, he took advantage of his authority over her and abused her.

I reiterate, this was a man who bargained and gifted his barely teenaged sister to a warlord and threatened her with violence if she didn’t acquiesce to his every demand. He was the one who gave her away. He was the one who secured his inevitable fate and set into motion Daenerys’ awakening from her abuse. He was the one who disregarded and disrespected the Dothraki at every turn, which in the end got him killed. Viserys was the only one responsible for his death. You don’t just approach the Khaleesi of a Dothraki horde with a sword and threaten to cut her son out of her—on the night of a special ceremony, in a peaceful city where weapons are explicitly not allowed, in front of the Khal himself, the elders of the tribe, and thousands of other people in the tribe—and get away with it. Explain to me how Dany was supposed to save him from that? What was Dany supposed to have told them? That he was king in some land they gave no fucks about and they should respect his authority? By Dothraki law, drawing a weapon on anyone, even someone completely insignificant, would have been punishable by death—and he did it to the freaking queen. In any scenario, in Westeros or Essos, he would have been killed.

Despite all the abuse, Daenerys still cared for him. She protected him from harm after he assaulted her in front of her bodyguards and handmaiden. Do you honestly believe that if Drogo had been there, Viserys would have survived as long as he did? Daenerys commanded her bodyguard to leave him alone and when she did, she still called him her brother. She punished him for his insult, but she kept what happened from her husband who would have surely killed him. She reached out to him, made him clothing, tried to reason with him and instead he hit her in attempt to assert his dominance. He knew he was losing ownership over her and that only increased his abusiveness toward her and his insolence. This was twice now after he hit her that she had mercy on him. This was countless times during the months of traveling with the Dothraki that she begged Drogo to spare him. People behave as though as Daenerys didn’t protect him and love him despite what he did to her. It was obvious that she cared about him to the point where she ignored his abuse of her to spare his life.

You can feel for Viserys without woobifying him and excusing what he did to Daenerys. Furthermore, you can feel for him and understand and accept what happened to him without vilifying Dany, the one who put up with Viserys’ physical and sexual abuse for years.

P.S. I’m sure if you tried to hug Viserys, he’d have spat in your face like he did to Dany.

You can love Harry Lloyd without projecting your feelings for him onto his character.

/House Targaryen stan out

agreed (with watermeloncholy of course) 100%. The blatant disregard for Dany’s victimization at the hands of her brother among certain fans is extremely disturbing to be honest—and I say blatant because we actually READ (in the books) and SEE (on the show) Viserys exercise his power over her in the most physically and sexually abusive ways.

Like, this isn’t something that’s left for the readers/viewers to interpret, it’s canon and it’s overt and it’s FACT. Nonetheless, she did what she could for him with whatever power she had, which is more than anyone can say for him.

I mean, don’t get me wrong, I adore Harry Lloyd and I did sympathize with certain aspects of Viserys as a character (and even enjoyed him immensely on the show), but that DOES NOT absolve him of anything. He was both physically and sexually abusive to his dependent little sister—a bully of the worst sort, if you will.

(posting this, in case anyone’s interested)

Oh, gosh, I’m really flattered by this!!

My taste in music honestly goes all over the place, so I guess I’ll just give you some of my top played stuff (and some links ^.^)

Even if you have no interest in homestuck, some of the music written for it and inspired by it is absolutely incredible. (FlareBlackOlive Scribe (A.K.A. Resurrection: PM’s Theme)ClockstopperClockwork Reversal Reversed, and manymany others are just incredible.)

Other instrumental pieces I love include The Reichenbach FallsO SayaCherryA Romance of Protons and NeutronsDragons, and again, plenty of others. I also adore movie soundtracks. Some of my favorites include The Social Network, Black Swan, and Pride & Prejudice. Also, every Disney soundtrack ever ;D.

For more mainstream music, my taste spans probably every decade and genre, but some current favorites include POWER, Coming Home, Cable TV, Challengers, Smooth Criminal (glee), Hell on Heels, Fly, Cold War, Mack the Knife, Precious Things, The Only Living Boy in New York, Immigrant Song, Do You Want to Fight Me, Rocks and Water, Amazed, Skeleton Song, To the Grave, Turpentine, Say Hey (I Love You).

Some of my favorite artists include Entertainment for the Braindead, Regina Spektor, E Nomine (creepy as fuck german trance-techno), The Alan Parsons Project (The Turn of a Friendly Card), wow okay this is getting really long i’m going to stop now.

If you want download links to any of these, let me know, and I’ll put them up on mediafire ;).

Sobbing a little because this guy is so ignorant

Right. So a little background. This guy started harassing Riley, calling them racist, the usual bullshit that goes into their inbox. Pissed me off. I sent a few asks, and he answered them, proving just how idiotic and childish his worldview is.

So here is your argument:

How in the name of all that is holy do POC not have power over white people when there is a black president?

Right. Lets look at numbers, shall we?

How many white presidents have we had? 44. Of those, one has been black. One.

The population of African Americans is currently at 12.4%. Right now, there is one black person in the Senate. Does that seem at all strange to you? Or are you okay that blacks are underrepresented in politics?

Right now, (and this has been the case for thousands of years - big shock) white people control everything. We exploited slave labor in the past, and we’re still reaping the benefits. Today, we exploit both foreign and domestic workers. Basically every major corporation - television, radio, production - is run by whites. Specifically by white males.

Do you understand what this means? This means that everything we see on television, everything we’re fed through politics, everything society teaches us, comes through a WHITE, MALE-DOMINATED lens. Black people have little to no power in the media and politics. Or really anything at all.

Lets take a glance at the wage gap. This appeared on my dash earlier today, so I’ll just quote stfusexists. “Just sourcing what Riley is talking about here…white women make on average 78 cents per dollar what white men make, and black men make on average 72 cents per dollar what white men make, thus getting paid less than white men AND white women. (And guess who gets paid less than all three? If you said black and Hispanic women, you are correct!).” (bolding added by moi)

If you think that POC have power over white people, you are incredibly ignorant of how the world works.

Of COURSE a POC can be racist. Racism is actually the belief that two races are inherently different because of their skin colour- as such, a POC can still be racist to a white person.

lolololol

Look at you pulling out your white person definition. That is NOT ALL THAT RACISM IS. Did you not read what I wrote at all? Or did you just completely ignore it. Anyone who actually understands the effects of racism in the real world know that that is not the real definition of racism. As I said before, racism = power + prejudice.

Did you not understand that? Let me make it more clear.

RACISM = POWER + PREJUDICE

POC do not have the power to be racist. Because, big shocker, white people have all the power. But apparently you think that POC do have power, so I doubt that this will get through your thick skull.

So, no. POC cannot be racist towards white people. Calling out ‘reverse racism’ is just as stupid as calling out ‘reverse sexism’ or ‘heterophobia.’

Oh take your tucking bollocks elsewhere will you, and don’t take simple fucking slang so seriously I’m not equating having female anatomy with being stupid, otherwise I wouldn’t use ‘dick’ in the same context, would I?

No matter what context you use them in, gendered insults are incredibly derogatory and degrading. Especially towards women. These types of insults are used to systematically show that being female is particularly degrading. However, while using ‘dick’ or ‘prick’ is probably not the greatest idea, it is not  nearly as bad as calling anyone a ‘cunt.’

You see, female gendered insults very specifically make a woman and her genitals interchangeable. Basically, they reduce women to sex objects. When a man is called a female gendered insult, that is reducing the man to being a woman, taking away his masculinity and calling him lesser. As a self-proclaimed feminist, you should really have a better idea of what that means. Because you are male, you have no right to call any woman any gendered insult. You cannot reclaim the word. Stop using it.

Your claim that ‘dick’ is just as bad is downright stupid. Male is the default. Therefore, male gendered insults do not carry the same weight that female gendered insults do. They still suck, but no more than any other insult because they are normalized by their masculinity.

tl;dr - You are clearly clinging to racist and sexist beliefs. You go around spouting off your high and mighty beliefs, but when confronted with a POC who tells you that you are racist, you call them a cunt and say that they’re the racist one instead of - oh I don’t know - maybe listening? When confronted with a woman who says that you are sexist, you deny it and still refuse to listen.

Check your fucking privilege.
